About that English degree!
I earned my designation as a Certified General Accountant in 2004 and I’m a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants Association of Canada. I’m also the holder of a mostly dormant degree in English Literature from the University of British Columbia. My interest in literature, and all the arts, really, led me to my career in accounting. In an early effort to put my English degree to use, I volunteered as the bookkeeper at Geist Magazine which inspired me to take my first accounting course — my path was set.
Nonprofits, Small Businesses and Individuals
Working with non-profits and charities
By definition the priorities and functional models of non-profits and charities are unlike those of commercial businesses. The regulatory environment is unique and shifting: from what returns to file, to what rules apply, to how to present financial information.
We’ll discuss your organization’s structure and operations to evaluate its needs in regard to tax-compliance, efficiency and best practices.
Working with small businesses
A variety of questions and decisions present themselves at every stage in the lifecycle of a small business: What sales taxes should be charged on what products and services? Is it time to incorporate? Can we afford to hire staff?
At our initial consultation, we’ll talk about bookkeeping, tax obligations and what financial information will help you realize your vision for the business. We’ll map out the important milestones you can expect to encounter and devise a plan to address them.
Working with individuals
The complexity and nature of your tax return(s) depend on the types of income you earn. We’ll assess your situation and determine what returns and schedules we need to file.
In advance of the tax-filing season, I’ll email you my personal tax checklist. Once you’ve gathered your files, get in touch and we’ll make delivery arrangements for hard copies or digital files. When your tax return is done, we’ll review it together then I will submit it to Canada Revenue Agency via efile. CRA conducts regular reviews of efiled tax returns, you can authorize me to provide whatever information is requested should your return be selected for review.
I also prepare and file T1 and GST/HST returns.
